Stop At: Golden City Temple (Wat Xieng Thong), Luang Prabang Laos
One of Luang Prabang’s most famous sites, these limestone caves near the Mekong have been a place of worship for more than a thousand years.
Pak ou caves: One of the most respected holy sites in Lao; Pak Ou Caves have a history dating back thousands of years. Packed with over 4,000 Buddha icons, the caves, a shrine to the river spirit and Lord Buddha, are set in a dramatic limestone cliff at the point where the Mekong joins the Nam Ou River. There are two caves to visit, the lower cave called Tham Ting and the upper cave Tham Theung, both boasting miniature Buddhist figures that are mostly made from wood.
Alms giving: Rise early to observe the solemn morning ritual of monks walking through the streets to collect alms. Tak bat, or almsgiving, is a must-see experience for travelers to Luang Prabang. After the opportunity to make your own rice offering to saffron-robed monks, you head to a morning market.
