Guided walking tour of the Croix Rousse
This guided tour offers you the opportunity to discover the unique history of silk in Lyon. In the 16th century, King Francis I granted privileges to two Genoese. By providing know-how and tools, they will contribute to the establishment of Lyon's leading industry. It will remain the only one for several centuries. For three centuries, the "Canuts" of Lyon wove silk, gold, and silver in the Saint Georges district. In the 19th century, they moved with their families and trades to the Croix-Rousse hill. It will then become the noisy "hill that works" in front of the silent "hill that prays".
This visit offers you the opportunity to unwind the silk thread in Lyon. As you wander along the slopes of the hill, you will discover the history of silk, the social history of a district but also a particular architecture combining professional activity and private life. The visit will end in one of the last silk workshops.
