Unable to locate the lost figure, King Alfonso VI gave himself up to prayer until a section of the walls collapsed and revealed the image, still lit by the candles with which it had been buried centuries ago.

It is presided over by two of the most important buildings in the capital: its western outline is delimited by the Royal Palace and the eastern one by the Royal Theater. Its northern face is made up of the Real Monasterio de la Encarnación, which was expropriated from the Priora's Garden to be integrated into the plaza.

The origin of its name is in the street of Cuchilleros to which it gives exit, and in which they were the factories of the guild of cutlery that they supplied their articles to the guild of butchers concentrated in the interior and bordering of the Greater place.
