Upper and Lower Mexico City Architectural Tour
4 h
About this activity
This walking tour explores the notions of “upper” and “lower” in architecture, social configuration and urban planning. Beginning with a privileged view over “Madero”, the most prominent and historic street in town, you will head to the National Palace. Once the exotic Palace of Emperor Moctezuma, it now houses the Presidential Offices and Diego Rivera’s wall paintings representing his take on Mexico’s social history.
From here, you begin a journey into the bowel of the city: the “Merced”, a trade district that has witnessed displacement and impoverishment and is currently one of the most vibrant manifestations of Mexican popular culture.
This walking tour also features the path of the main supply canal through which food and goods reached the city for almost 5 centuries, a visit to the smallest church in town and the opportunity to pay respect to the “Santa Muerte” or holy dead, a phenomenon that is challenging catholic belief in Mexico.
