Tur Malka is the name given to Mount Royal by Montreal's Yiddish poets in the early 20th century. By drawing the name "Tur Malka" from the Talmud, these poets claimed one of Montreal's major landmarks and its symbolism as their own. This tour explores how Jews in Montreal interpreted the cultural and geographic conditions they faced and the contrasts between Jewish visions for their new home and the realities of life in this city. Tur Malka begins and ends at the Museum of Jewish Montreal.

We started the tour at the Montreal Jewish Museum. There were only 3 of us on the tour, so the guide, Nama was able to really personalize and answer detailed questions. She was a great tour guide with a real passion for the Jewish community and history. The tour really begins with the arrival of Jews in Montreal and traces how they embraced the city. I appreciated the photos and other primary source documents Nama showed us to illustrate and enhance the buildings we were seeing and the stories she was telling. Be sure you are prepared to walk, we went as far north as Fletcher Park across from Mont Royal. We were her first group!
