About this activity
Leave your central Moscow hotel by luxury minibus, and then travel northeast out of the city to the visit the famous Golden Ring – a series of charming, medieval fortified cities and towns. Built just after the death of the Grand Prince Vladimir, the towns of the Golden Ring attracted power and wealth from Moscow – leading to the name the Golden Ring.
After traveling for roughly three hours, stop in your first Golden Ring town of the day: the historical settlement of Vladimir. Stretch your legs on a walking tour, hearing the history of the town once known as the capital of Rus. Head inside its star attraction, the regal-looking Assumption Cathedral (once Russia’s main cathedral), and admire treasures like Rublyov’s The Last Judgement frescoes, and then stroll over to the equally enchanting Cathedral of St Dmitry. Its exterior walls are its main attraction – adorned in incredible stone carvings.
Take a stroll around the town, admiring monuments like the Golden Gate, and then return to your coach for the short journey north to Suzdal. Stop for lunch (own expense) at a Russian restaurant called Traktir in the town, and then head out to explore Suzdal. Walk around the ramparts of Suzdal’s Kremlin, and hear little-known facts about the town’s history and culture, learning how it was once a favorite town of the Soviet government.
Besides Suzdal’s fine architecture, the town boasts several world-class museums, too. Pay a visit to the open-air Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life to see wooden houses, barns, windmills and churches – all built without using a single nail. Then, head inside the Museum of Crystal Glass to see a collection of Gus-Crystalny’s glass designs. Learn about the craft of glass blowing the area, and admire exquisite Russian jewellery boxes.
After exploring Suzdal, learning all about its culture, history and architecture, return to your minibus for the journey back to Moscow. Your tour ends around 10pm in the evening back at the start point.

Igor is a gentleman, professional, well-informed on Russian history and architecture and tireless. He gave us 14 hours instead of 12. He took photos and even stopped again on the way back to revisit a shop we liked. His driver was excellent too! Igor gave charity to poor people we met and even bought fruit(which he shared with us) from an elderly woman on the way.Expensive but worth it.No traffic since we began at 7 am.
Yuri, our driver, was punctual, professional, courteous and a pleasure to ride with. He stopped when we needed and he picked clean and up to date facilities. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The two tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. They both made our experience discovering these Golden Ring cities enjoyable. We were not advised about the ongoing known road construction on the way to Vladimir that added one hour to the trip from Moscow. This resulted in our tour in Vladimir being limited to one hour. The tour did not include strolling around the town or seeing any monuments other than the Golden Gate. In Suzdal we did not see the museum of crystal glass or learn about glass blowing, We only saw the exterior of one church in the open air museum of wooden architecture and peasant life. WE didn't see any Windmills, Barns, Houses, etc. The city tours were too short, based on what was stated should be included in both tours.
Suzdal and Vladimir are a long drive from Moscow but the scenic route made us forget about the distance! The towns important from religious and political perspective are blessed with natural beauty and a charm which is heightened by the strikingly colourful onion domes - the highlight of the Byzantine architecture. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. She made sure we had an eventful day.
The guide speaks good English and is friendly. She even took us to a local restaurant for us to try out the local speciality foods and drinks.
Sergey, our guide, did a fabulous job and it was a perfect addition to seeing Moscow and St. Petersburg to go back further in history to the 12th century!
Too many hours to see almost nothing, medieval town as promised hard to envision
