“The slums are not a place of despair. Its inhabitants are all working towards a better life”- Vikas Swarup
There are two sides to every coin. The city of Mumbai, although known for its glitz, glamours, Bollywood industry, nightlife and mixed culture, is also home to the largest slum in the world. This half-day trail takes you through Dharavi, as you dwell into a life, that is unheard of in the papers, but can be beautifully captured through one's eyes.
'Slums', what comes to your mind when you hear this word? Break those preconceived notions as you explore the sights and sounds of a locality that is much more than just a place where poverty-stricken people reside. It is the place that is alive with a flourishing small-scale industry and the spirit of the community!
During this tour, gain an insight into the positive side of Dharavi as you observe a wide range of activities such as pappadum-making, recycling, pottery making, embroidery, soap making, and leather tanning. Starting at Regal cinema in Colaba, you will pass through several historical locations of the city of dreams. The knowledgeable guide will surely capture your attention with interesting stories and snippets relating to these famous localities. You will pass by Kamathipura, a well-known red light district of Mumbai and Dhobi Ghat, a well-known open-air laundromat where washers wash clothes from Mumbai's largest hospitals, hotels, and garment industries.
Now, it is time to enter Dharavi and see a completely different side of Mumbai. Visit the recycle area of Dharavi where everything old from plastics to metals come for recycling. Know how the process of recycling works at the recycling plant. Visit a bakery and treat your taste buds to some delicious Khari biscuits and enjoy a hot cup of tea as you take a break. See how the women of Dharavi makes the popular disc-shaped appetizer- poppadom.
As you pass through the residential area, feel the spirit of unity that exists despite the diversity in religion, custom, and belief. Last but not the least, visit the Kumbharwada pottery colony. Interact with the local artists of Dharavi and learn a thing or two about the beautiful art of pot making.
As this tour comes to an end, you will realize that the city of dreams is not just about those in the limelight. There are other hardworking hands and hopeful eyes, that have dreams too. For us, their dreams might be simple and small, but for them, it means the world. And to achieve this, they strive tirelessly day and night.
