Johnny’s Po-boy: Established in 1950, this third generation French Quarter landmark dishes out the best Po-boys in New Orleans. The sandwich was first served to striking streetcar workers in 1929 and has been a New Orleans favorite ever since.

Stop At: Tujague's, 823 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

Tujague’s: This restaurant was previously a Spanish armory before it started slinging classic Creole dishes in an elegant setting. You’ll try their house specialty – a tender boiled beef brisket served in Creole sauce with just a touch of horseradish.

Stop At: Laura's Candies, 331 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA

Laura’s Pralines and Candies: Nestled in the historic French Quarter, the Creole pralines and hand-dipped chocolates here are made fresh daily with recipes that date back to the 18th century. New Orleans’ oldest candy store is still going strong.

Stop At: The Court of Two Sisters, 613 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA

With the only daily jazz brunch in town, Court of the Two Sisters is famed for its beautiful wisteria-blanketed courtyard and soothing fountains. This history-rich, two centuries old restaurant is a must-see for any new visitor to the Crescent City. Take a stroll through the famous courtyard, mouth-watering New Orleans Seafood Gumbo at the Court of the Two Sisters po-boy shop.

You have to try the famous bread pudding at the New Orleans Creole Cookery. You haven’t experienced New Orleans until you’ve stepped into this iconic eatery, courtesy of A.J. and Anna Tusa of the famous New Orleans Tusa restaurant family. The Cookery promises a shot of new generation energy combined with the city’s most treasured cooking traditions in a setting that really speaks to the way people dine today.

We like doing a food tour of every major new city we visit, giving us what we think is a good feel fo the city and its culinary delights. This was one of the worst we've done. That said, we had an extremely good tourist guide, Jeannine Chance. By chance (pun intended), a former elementary headmistress, her knowledge of New Orleans' history was outstanding, and she was brilliant at imparting all that knowledge to the number of people who joined the food tour. Trouble was this was a food tour, not a history tour. The food in each establishment we went to was like being on a sausage factory conveyor belt. We had to wait for other Food Tours to be escorted out of the assigned venue, then led us in, feed us with VERY average food, and then shoo us out of the venue ready for the next Food Tour to feed in. We did not have one good bite on the Tour. Not one. As I say, ironically we got our money's worth courtesy of the luck of the draw getting our Tour guide on the history of New Orleans. As for a Food Tour, it was extremely disappointing and not recommended for others.

our guide, Suzanne(?) was very informative and seemed to know her New Orleans history well. her specialty is coffee which was cool, she's writing a book about the history of coffee in New Orleans. the places we visited were exactly what we expected, the muffuletta sandwiches were everyone in my groups favorite by far.

Janice, Janice, Janice! We had such a wonderful time on this food tour! I really cannot say enough about the tour and our tour guide, Janice. She was full of energy and was like a ray of light. She not only taught us extremely interesting facts about the food history of NOLA, but gave us an overall history lesson of NOLA and the French Quarter. Informative and fun with some fabulous food! I want to go back and take this tour again the next time I am in NOLA. Would highly recommend it, especially in the beginning of your trip. Bring your walking shoes and get ready to eat some great food! A truly fun afternoon.
