Stop At: Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA

After pickup from one of 16 pickup locations in New Orleans, it's a short drive across Lake Pontchartrain to Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.

Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife. It’s the ideal way to take in the lush environment of Cajun country.

As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for resident wildlife including alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and many other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Their ancestors once roamed the earth with the dinosaurs and scientists estimate that they have existed for more than 150 million years.

Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine from your guide. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures.

After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour on Honey Island Swamp, your guide returns you to shore. You can either take the coach back to your New Orleans hotel or make your own way to your next destination, depending on the option you have chosen when booking.

Everett was a great guide, funny and engaging. He shared a lot of information about the unique ecosystem and animals and we were able to see tons of alligators and even wild pigs! It was awesome to get out of the city for a day!

The bus ride to the swamp was very informative (it’s a hour bus ride to swamp including shuttle to actual bus). The swamp tour itself was fun. We got to see alligators, spiders, some type of water snail, wild boars (one name Kevin Bacon who smiles for treats lol) and raccoons! Had a great time!!

Capt. Greg was great. He made sure we got to see everything close up. It was a nice beautiful day. The bus was waiting, so no time to enjoy the gift shop.

From start to finish, I had a great time! Kim, the bus driver, was a wonderful historian of the New Orleans area. She was entertaining and informative; I learned more from the bus ride than I might have from a formal tour - the neighborhoods, the effects of Katrina, the architecture, and more. On the return bus ride, she educated us to the best places to get good New Orleans cooking - which proved helpful later that evening. While on the bayou, Captain Emmett similarly was a spectacular guide. We were able to see all sorts of wildlife close up (gators, wild boar, birds) as well as learn about the swamp, its history and the foliage specific to it - usages, properties, identifying features. I was able to take some great pictures! I would definitely encourage anyone going to New Orleans to take advantage of this swamp tour!

This is a very well organized tour company. They picked us up on time started the tour on time it lasted exactly 2 hours and we were right back at our hotel on time. Very efficient staff. Now if your primary reason is to see alligators, then this is the tour for you. They feed the alligators from the boat so they’ve learned to swim right up to the boat for food. At the very end of the tour there are several wild hogs that almost jump into the boat to get to the food. Since I'm an avid birder, I was also interested in finding birds to photograph. Captain Tom saw a Little Blue Heron and called it a Poodoo. Then he saw a Green Heron and called it a Whistling Duck. He got a quite annoyed at me when I tried to correct him. (And Tom, don't call it a "White Egret" since there are three egret species that are white and that's not the correct name for any of them.) I'd just say that once you've seen the first 5 alligators, the next 5 don't hold as much interest. But it was indeed quite a good tour. We really liked our bus driver, Allen.

Seeing gators, birds, wild flowers, snakes, and wild pigs up close and personal is a must do even if you don't have a bucket list.

This tour was great. We were picked up for the tour at our hotel, then transferred to a bigger bus. The trip to the swamp was about 45 minutes and the driver told us about interesting facts about the areas we rode through. We crossed Lake Pontchartrain, which is huge. Upon arrival at the swamp you check in, are given an armband and a chance to buy snacks and use the restroom before the tour begins. The boat held about 20 people and we sped down the river before going into the swamp. The wind made it quite chilly as the air temp was only in the low 60s, but once we’re slowed down it wasn’t as cold. We saw wild boar, alligators, herons, egrets, turtles and raccoons. The tour guides know exactly where to go to see wildlife. The swamp itself is very beautiful and there are many photo opportunities. The tour itself was about 2 hours. Highly recommended!

This tour was full of interesting information. Our guide, Emmitt, was very knowledgeable and fun. We were there on an unusually cold day so we only saw one alligator but we saw lots of other animals.

Loved this tour! Our tour guide was very informative. All of the tour guides did their best to get us close to the animals. We saw several alligators, a raccoon, wild pigs, and birds. We went at the end of February so it was just starting to warm. The alligators were out soaking up the sun.
