The dream of America, 'Di Goldeneh Medina' (the golden land), attracted millions of Eastern European Jews fleeing oppression and pogroms starting in the early 1880s. Close to 2 million Jews came to New York City in the following 4 decades.
The new immigrants, mostly form Poland and Russia, found the streets to be overcrowded with people and pushcarts. Then in 1924, strict quotas with restrictive immigration laws limited their entrance into America.
Visit historic sights important to the Jews who came to New York as immigrants and hear about the stories of what brought them here - and what life was like for them once they arrived. They built a a unique community where they established synagogues, schools, banks, and businesses.
