First, the location of the estate is convenient, for it is close to the center of the island. I was staying on the northern side of the island at Runaway bay, and Appleton was simply too far to catch my interest (I didn't want to sit through a 3 hour drive). This location was close and easier to access. The areas surrounding the estate are beautiful, so the route to get there is scenic. Our tour driver's car was clean and well-kept. The AC was very convenient, and the driver was knowledgeable of the area and Jamaican history. As a result, the drive went by quickly. He brought his mother along, and she was a pleasant and funny woman who had a vast knowledge as well and provided delicious snacks and rum punch along the drive. The driver also stopped at a few choice photo spots, and we were all able to get excellent photos. On the way back, we asked for a food recommendation, and he took us to a nice location with excellent food. The estate itself and its grounds are beautiful and lush. The area is a mixture of grassland and sugar cane surrounded by forest. The tour went quickly and seamlessly. Our tour guide was knowledgeable. She also was eloquent and did an excellent job explaining the operations of the facilities. The tour covers the whole process of rum making, and I appreciated that the grounds are not only a fully operating rum distillery, but also a fully operational sugar plantation. The rum itself is delicious. I liked the tasting at the end giving a variety of different rums, some better than others, but the point of course, is to show the difference in quality as it ages. I purchased 3 bottles after the tour, and allowing us to try the molasses produced on site was nice touch. On a side-note, I hope that the owner puts a barrier between employees and the tourists as they move through. the other group that was part of the tour were extremely rude, and put their cell phones right up to the faces of workers, as they were working, to get pictures and video. Overall, an excellent tour well worth the time of casual tourists and rum connoisseurs alike.
