About this activity
After early morning hotel pickup in Palenque, it's a 3.5-hour drive to the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. Upon reaching Las Guacamayas, you will have the opportunity to see how the local inhabitants — made up of about 40 families indigenous to neighboring Oaxaca — have worked to preserve the endangered red guacamayas, or scarlet macaws.
Located on the banks of the Lacantún River and part of the municipality of Marqués de Comillas, Chiapas, the entire rural community has made strategic alliances in the conservation of ecological systems for the future. Learn from your guide about their initiatives to help in the continued survival of these birds.
You will have about 45 minutes to eat a provided regional breakfast before a motorboat tour on the Lacantún River. During the ride, admire the flora and fauna in their natural habitat, including macaws and other animal species such as howler monkeys, white-tailed deer, toucans, and white falcons, among others.
After roughly 2.5 hours, a stop is made to observe artificial nests constructed with fallen trees to conserve the macaws. At the end of your visit, you will have time for lunch (own expense) before the drive back to Palenque and drop-off at your hotel.
