About this activity
After hotel pickup in Panama City, begin your day trip to El Valle de Antón, located high in the mountains of Panama and perched at the base of the largest inhabited volcano crater in the world. Once a crater lake, this quiet village became home to native people from the surrounding mountains who have been here for thousands of years.
Your tour includes a few stops, but you can choose which places to see and for how long. You may visit La Piedra Pintada, remnants of El Valle's pre-Columbian culture; these undeciphered petroglyphs lie below the crater formation La India Dormida. Hike to the top of the Sleeping Indian, as she is called, and take in the sweeping view of the surrounding mountains and valley below.
You can also visit the zoo (El Nizpero) and the Orchid Center, or simply relax in a hammock with a glass of Panamanian beer (entrance fees, food, and drinks are at your own expense). Enjoy the spring-like climate, listen to the local birds, and breathe in the clean mountain air.
On weekends, this quiet village comes to life as Panamanian weekenders arrive to enjoy El Valle's arts and crafts market, where locals and members of the Kuna Yala community sell their colorful goods.
At the end of the tour, you will be driven back to your hotel.

I highly recommend this tour! El Valle de Anton was breathtaking - quite a different experience from Panama City. The town itself was adorable, and the short hike to the waterfall gave one the feeling of being encased inside the jungle. The view looking down into the valley from one of the edge peaks was spectacular it gave some perspective as to what the outline of the extinct volcano would have looked like millions of years ago. I had a wonderful time visiting the wildlife preserve, even though I dont normally care for zoos this facility, which is in a lovely natural setting, was created to help rehabilitate animals and birds native to Panama, with the intent of releasing them back into the wild. My guide Tommy was excellent he was very knowledgeable, perfectly fluent in both English and Spanish, and very accommodating. As a female traveling alone, I really appreciated how trustworthy and respectful he was - I felt very at ease, and even like I had made a new friend! It was also so convenient to be picked up and dropped off right at your own hotel. I had done another tour with a different company where this service was not provided, and it made a huge difference. Moreover, when I mentioned my regret at not having time to see more of the Caribbean side of Panama during my trip, he said he could book a modified version of his San Lorenzo Fort excursion for me, a private tour specifically catered to my schedule I was flying out that afternoon. San Lorenzo fort is a gorgeous ruins in a spectacular location - right where the Chagres River meets the Caribbean Ocean. I was captivated and SO happy I didnt miss out on seeing it!
