Soberania National Park, Monkey Island and Indian Village from Panama City
1 day
About this activity
It’s time to wave farewell to Panama City and get out into nature! Breathe in the fresh air of parks, islands, rainforests, and rural villages. This Panama City jungle tour will turn its back on bustling city life and welcome the rainforest in with open arms – come along for the ride!
You’ll be picked up from the American Trade Hotel in the historic district, and the first part of this Panama City wildlife tour will take you past Panama Canal’s famous Culebra Cut and towards Soberania National Park, Lake Gatun, and the Chagres River.
Known for its huge variety of birds (the Audubon Society's annual bird count once spotted over 500 species in 24 hours!), Soberania National Park is full of wildlife and is a wonderful place to watch for monkeys, sloths, eagles, and plenty more. There’s no denying that this spot in the Panama jungle really is the jackpot for animal lovers. You’ll also catch a boat out to Monkey Island – doesn’t take a genius to guess what you’ll find here! Keep your eyes peeled to spot a number of different species of monkey.
Next, you will continue your tour up the Chagres River to an authentic Indian village. This will be an opportunity for you to get in touch with the local community, and learn all about their culture, customs, history, and more. As part of the visit, you’ll take a short hike along the trails through the rainforest to learn about how the local plants are used for medicinal purposes. With your local guide by your side through this adventure, you’ll learn plenty about the culture around you.
After your Panama jungle experience of a life time, you’ll head back into the city (perhaps a little begrudgingly…) where your local guide will drop you back off at the American Trade Hotel.

Our guides were wonderful and fun, giving us food for the monkeys and having them literally eating right out of our hands! A one of a kind experience
This tour was exciting, adventurous and iinformative. Our boat was actually ON the canal! How about those bragging rights!!!! The Indian village was absolutely amazing! But the person who made this an amazing tour was Russ our guide. He is a walking wealth of knowledge about Panama. I will do this again!
What an awesome day out! We got to see several types of monkeys up close and we even got to hear the howler monkeys! It was cool being in the Panama canal and seeing some of the ships cruising along. We also got to visit an indigenous community and learn more about the jungle/rainforest. All very interesting and it was great getting additional history from Gonzo our guide - awesome!!. Overall, a great day!
This tour was amazing! Our first guide Ross met us at the American Trade Hotel in the Old Town where we were picked up. He drove us to the dock, all the while providing information on both what our day would entail of and about the parks and canals we were driving by. When we reached our fiberglass boat, we were introduced to our tour guide, Gonzo. Gonzo was very enthusiastic and knowledgable. It was great getting to see 2 out of the 3 types of monkeys enter our boat so we could see them up close. The 3rd type tends to stay up in the trees - we had a great view of them, as well. We were then taken to the Indian Village where we were introduced to the community and got to walk through a jungle. The whole experience was incredible. Getting to see Monkey Island and Soberania National Park/Indian Village all in one trip is so convenient and very interesting. I strongly recommend this trip!! Thank you, Ross and Gonzo!
One of the best tours I've been on. Boat ride and Monkey Islands fun, but visiting authentic indigenous village the best. Gonzo, our guide really knows his stuff about the monkeys, rainforest plants medical uses, and especially the culture and history of the tribe.
My wife and I went on this tour Wednesday January 17, 2018 with Gonzolas of Barefoot Panama, who is very knowledgeable, has a great personality and a perfect command of the English language. It was a pleasure spending the day with him and would highly recommend this tour. Thank you again Gonzolas.
