It took five years and almost 20,000 men to build this castle in Vaux-le Vicomte. Nicolas Fouquet picked a trio of very famous artists to design his domain, including Louis Le Vau, who was a famous architect in Paris who had designed several chateaux and buildings. The gardens were one of Le Notre's masterpiece which helped him to become famous. He was the creator of the concept of the "jardins à la française" which goal was to create both perspective and illusion of space. The last artist to work on the project was Le Brun who was a great painter and decorator.
Walk through the rooms of the palace to see the it lavishly decorated with stunning gilded walls, statues, tapestries, and the era's finest furnishings. After you're done exploring the palace, head outside to the gardens to see its fountains, canals, and stone curbs.

We had a great visit to the Palace but we had to wait two hours for the shuttle that runs between the train station and the Palace. Nowhere was it indicated that the shuttle runs every two hours and they go on break for two hours from about 1235-1435. The train got in at 1230 and the shuttle says it arrives at 1235. It did arrive but the women did not let us onboard and she came back two hours later and took us to the Palace which is about a 30 minute ride. We paid for the shuttle through the web site and it didn't tell us arrival and departure times. Another man had to wait the two hours also, so we were not the only people that got messed up by the shuttle timing. That was the biggest disappointment because we didn't get back to Paris to do anymore touring because it was too late in the evening to tour anything else. This trip was a 30th birthday trip for our daughter and this was one of the highlights she wanted to do on the trip. Because of the rain, we almost went back to Paris without going to the Palace due to time constraints.
Works best if you see this Chateau before going to Versailles! The location/gardens and Chateau are beautiful and the history is intriguing!
