About this activity
Arcades & Laneways is the most comprehensive guided historical tour in Perth. Western Australia is an enormous state that takes up a third of the country – and Perth is its booming capital. Originally not of any interest to the British, it was only when French and Dutch explorers started sniffing around that the English decided there should be a colony in the West of Australia. On this Perth tour that focuses on the arcades and laneways of the city you'll learn just such stories and so many more, from the people who know best - the locals!
Discover the evolving small bar scene and hidden gems on this information-packed walking tour through the heart of Perth's lesser known streetscapes with a friendly 'Sandgroper' as your guide. The arcades and laneways provide interesting routes to navigate through the city centre as well as great spots to check out hip and happening events and the proliferation of street art. Together we will explore the modern day secret nuggets of the Central Business District plus new developments including the Bell Tower, Elizabeth Quay and Yagan Square.
To really get know the city, you’ll get stories about the quirks of its history, heritage, culture, and architecture - a plethora of Perth highlights! Rather than get bogged down in dates and historical data, your passionate guide will show you why Perth is the way it is, and what really makes this city tick.
Your Perth tour finishes up at a local pub in Northbridge, where the first drink is on us! A great afternoon out, whether you are visiting from over east, overseas, or even if you are a local West Australian who wants to dig deeper into our rich history.

Everyone coming to Perth for a visit should do this tour. Thanks Iris for such a great afternoon. I learnt the interesting history of Perth and visited some wonderfully diverse places including the new library, communal garden where anyone can pick the herbs and edible flowers, the quaint old arcades, laneways like Wolf Lane with the wolf pawprints. We watched the St George and the Dragon clock animation when it chimed the hour. We also had a stop half way at the best Fish and Chip Shop I've been to in years, if not decades, in Grand Lane. I saw some stunning artwork on the houses in the lanes. We finished up with a drink at a lovely pub in Northbridge. I'd never have seen all I did on my own. A truly great afternoon.
Our tour guide Ryan was excellent and we enjoyed a very informative and relaxed tour of Perth CBD. Highly recommended.
Excellent tour - really good guide with very good local and historic knowledge. Would recommend highly. The walking pace was relaxed and there was time to take photos and ask questions- the time sped by. It covered - history and culture including aboriginal aspects - buildings - gardens- Bell tower- Elizabeth Quay and some of the older facades remaining in the city. We then went onto some hidden food and drink spots in the CBD and ended with a drink in a small bar in a laneaway. It was a lovely evening.
An excellent tour, knowledgable guide and really helpful way to get to know Perth in a friendly informal atmosphere
My guide was amazing, entertaining and the two hour walk was so insightful. Perth has been transforming itself especially near the quay and reclaimed land - this walk reveled hidden gems too. a must for first time visitors or one who has not been back for awhile. Thank you VIator for recommending this tour.
It was very informative with a lay back tour guide, would highly recommend.
