About this activity
The towns we pass through are among the oldest in Western Australia and contain some beautifully maintained examples of early Federation, Victorian and Art Deco architecture.
Wave Rock is the furthest point of the tour from Perth and for many it is the highlight of the day. An amazing natural wave shaped rock formation with beautiful ochre and charcoal colouring rising approximately 15m and over 110m long.
There are a range of other attactions at Hyden and Wave Rock. The tourist centre has a restaurant cafe with an impressive dried cut wildflower ceiling display and the largest lace collection in Australia. There is also a 7 acre Wildlife Park which includes wombats, kangaroos, camels, deer, koalas and many wild birds. Hyden also has a very cool scrap metal sculpture promenade.
A few years ago local farmers and creative minds set about creating what has become a highlight in the area. The "Tin Horse Highway" is a 50km stretch of road adorned (or some might unkindly say littered), with recycled drums and tins, shaped into numerous horse-themed poses. This is an optional comical diversion to the tour and small sections can be seen if you want to focus your time on other places.
This Tour is an amazing road trip. A lot of country is covered and it gives an excellent first hand perspective on the size of Western Australia. The tour can be taken at any time of the year but the summer heat can be uncomfortable on the face of Wave Rock so hats with fly netting are essential. Many of the small towns hold shows and festivals during the Spring periods so July – November is ideal.
