Hugging the Schuylkill River about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of the city center, Manayunk was once a mill town, home to thriving cotton mills. During the Civil War, the mills switched from cotton textiles and paper to wool textiles in order to provide blankets for the troops.
The name Manayunk is a Lenni Lenape word for ‘where we go to drink,’ which is fitting for the lifestyle of 21st-century Manayunk. Even more fitting would be ‘where we go to eat and drink,’ as there are over 30 restaurants (and, in total, 80-plus businesses) along the neighborhood’s Main Street, today one of the hippest streets in the city. This was a great tour! The food was awesome the guide was fantastic! Highly recommend!
We had a lot of fun! Tried the best Philly Cheese steak ever!, learned alittle bit of the Philadelphia history...It was a nice walk through an old neighborhood. The guide was awesome! The only concern I would have is, after the tour is done...you are on your own to find your way back to your car....and it could be quite a hike for someone older. Other than that....Loved it!
