Our family really enjoyed this trip and the sights and tastes of the Douro Valley did not disappoint. The pickup was on time, our guide Chloe was entertaining while the drive gave us the opportunity to look around. The sites visited were both accommodating and professional in the way they explain the love they put into producing their wines. The views were simply stunning, and worth the trip on its own. The wines were delicious and we did leave with some of the local produce. All in all a great way to spend a day. I would recommend this tour to all and I would certainly go again if I find myself in beautiful Porto again.
This is a really nice way to visit the Douro Valley for a day. First stop for coffee was very welcome, then a fantastically picturesque drive to the next stop at a winery and olive oil manufacturer with the lovely Suzanna. Very interesting. The next stop was lunch at a local cafe at Pinhao, where the locals eat, and a visit to the train station to look at the tiles. The meals are authentic Portuguese fare, so be prepared for blood sausage or cod. Another winery where we were shown the whole port making process before tasting. The wines, food and views are great. It makes you want to come back for more.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Very friendly and knowledgeable driver. Excellent wines and very informative talks.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Douro Wine Tour with the visit to the two smaller vineyards. Though I would have preferred to have had one of the visits to one of the larger and better known vineyards. The countryside was lovely, the boat tour would have been much better if it hadn't been so crowded on board, not enough seating for everyone, our group was the last to board and were squeezed in. Lunch was good. My biggest negative was the long drive on twisting roads to get out to the area which is unfortunately unavoidable. In hindsight I think I would have preferred to take the train and then hook up with a guide at Pinhao train station.
Fantastic tour. Helio picked us up in the morning and apologized for being a tad late. Wasn't a big deal as he got us back on schedule right away. He was very informative and encouraged everyone to participate in learning about Douro. The two wineries he took us to were fantastic. Both were small and so felt much more intimate and more interesting. The first was a Port winery where the tour guide was basically a comedian. Was very entertaining but also answered all of our questions. Amount of wine given during tastings was solid. The second winery was known for its Red wines but we also got to taste the Honey and Olive Oil produced there as well. All three were great. Views from this winery were stunning which we got to enjoy as we did our tasting on an outdoor terrace. Lunch was also spot on. Felt it was very traditional food that locals would want to eat which is what we were hoping for. Upon dropping us back off in Porto, Helio gave us some restaurant recommendations on where to get very local food. We went to A Tasquinha he called and made reservations for us and the food was amazing. Tasted like a true home cooked Portuguese meal. Was not a fancy restaurant which is what we preferred. If you go, try the Monkfish Rice. Portions are also very generous and prices are very reasonable. Can't say enough about Helio. Was a great guide and by the end, just felt like we were talking to a friend who we had known years. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone thinking of taking a day trip to Douro.
I cannot recommend Hélio and Oporto Road Trips too highly enough. Having been let down by another provider, they stepped in at the last moment to provide what can only be described as an outstanding day out. From visiting Quintas in the Douro Valley with their visually stunning views to enjoying local traditional cuisine in a family run restaurant, Hélio’s organisation and time management was as impeccable as his knowledge of the area, its traditions and its history. I shall therefore be recommending this tour, without hesitation, to friends, family and colleagues alike.
