Wine, petiscos and Douro life full-day tour
Totally off-the-beaten-path, this “only-you” tour gives your group an intimate glimpse of Douro society through a delightful family involved in making wine in the Valley since the 1700s. Teresa and José are cousins with big hearts, heaps of character, a great sense of fun, and plenty of stories to share.
First, you’ll meet Teresa, the acting “rainha” (queen) and host of Casa dos Barros, a historic noble family manor house, half of which has been converted into an enchanting small hotel. You’ll have coffee in the garden and possibly a dip in the pool with vineyard views. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, You'll take a walk among the vines and orchards.
Lunch will take place in Teresa’s kitchen, around the eighteenth-century table, to eat typical Portuguese “petiscos” (small plates) and taste Lavradores de Feitoria wines – including an “aroma game” for added fun – and more of Teresa's stories. Coffee in the garden is followed by informal visits to the lost-in-time private rooms of the family home.
You’re then off to Casa dos Lagares, the wine property of bon vivant and Teresa’s cousin José. You'll tour the winery and taste more wines (including one of the best Ports James has ever tasted), then visit the nearby village house lovingly restored as a nineteenth-century home by José.
Late afternoon brings you to Miradouro de Casal de Loivos above the sleepy village of Pinhão for more breathtaking views - BBC London says it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Last, you'll take James' secret short walk through vineyards with olive and orange trees, and often, fantastic Douro light.
