It is the biggest monument in Africa at a height of 40 metres. It is made of granite and built on top of a hill. It was built to honor those who left the Cape Colony under British control in search of their own independence, these people became known as the Voortrekkers. This was between 1835 and 1854. There is a wall with 64 wagons which circles the monument. This symbolises the 64 wagons used at the battle of Blood River.
