The Jaguar Caves and El Nito Maya Tour

About this activity
The mysteries of this lost Mayan city are just waiting to be revealed. Once a thriving trade center, especially for jade, the ancient city of El Nito was visited by the conquistador Hernan Cortes in 1524. Visitors in El Nito will notice the distinctive terrace design, the central plaza and the only known game court in the region, just to name a few. Also of great historical significance, the earliest Mayan hieroglyphic writing was discovered here on a Leyden plateau small hatchet like object made of jade. You will then tour through The Jaguar Caves, named because the cave was the perfect shelter for jaguars. Hike for 20 minutes through the exotic jungle in a lush ecosystem. Please note: there are no large Mayan temples at this site. Much of the site remains unexcavated.
