About this activity
After pickup from your Punta Cana hotel, the first stop stop on the tour will be at the home of a traditional Dominican family, where you take a short tour and talk to some of the family members. From there you will stroll the grounds of a plantation to learn the process of making coffee and coconut oil. Your guide will also be sure to point out local fruits and vegetation along the way. Next, you will enjoy a stroll through the beautiful butterfly garden. Watch them flutter around as you learn a bit about the different varieties. As you make your way about a small gift shop, you'll view a chocolate demonstration where you can watch workers making chocolate first hand. Don't worry, there are plenty of free samples! You will also have the opportunity to buy some freshly made chocolate in different flavors, the famous Mamajuana, cigars and other local products!
As you leave the plantation, enjoy the gorgeous scenery around you as you make your way to the city of Higuey. Along the way, you will stop at a school to get a feel for how Dominican children spend their day. Your tour guide can answer questions about the school system while you take a look from the outside. As you enter Higuey, you will head to the Basilica, a Roman Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Lady Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic. Pay just $1 to enter and walk around this famous, impressive structure. From there you will make your way back into the countryside to enjoy a buffet style Dominican lunch overlooking gorgeous mountain scenery. After lunch there will be a quick visit to the river to relax for a minute. Sit by the water and take advantage of the view for some great pictures!
Leaving the mountains, you will head towards the sensational Macao Beach! Spend almost an hour enjoying this breathtaking coast. Refreshments will be served while you take a refreshing dip in the waist high water. This is the perfect, relaxing way to end a wonderful day full of new and educational experiences. This country adventure allows you to see parts of the country that you cannot see from your hotel. Take part in this cultural journey!
