About this activity
Get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience on this day trip from Punta Cana. You’ll be greeted by the majestic presence of humpback whales in the open waters of Samana Bay.
The Dominican Republic boasts one of the largest and best Humpback breeding sanctuaries in the world. Every year, more than 4,000 whales visit the Bay of Samana for the purpose of breeding. Your knowledgeable host and tour guide will tell you all about the habits of these magnificent creatures.
As soon as whales are spotted your boat will make its way cautiously to their location, where you’ll marvel at the sight of these wonderful creatures in the wild. Hear the eerie but soothing sound of the male humpback singing to attract a mate.
Next, it’s time to party, so get ready for a visit to the famous Bacardi Island, a little slice of paradise, where you’ll have lunch. Enjoy the powdery white sand and swaying palm trees, and take time for a dip in the warm turquoise waters before returning to Punta Cana. (Lunch location is subject to change without previous notice)

The start of the trip was most frustrating. Picked up on time in a minibus from our hotel on time although the minibus was way too small, not enough room, squashed in and hot. We then go back to a place that you have 'breakfast' - please don't rely on this, it is not good. The area that was laid out for us to sit at had fumes from the exhaust of the coach belting into that area. An hour after pick-up from the hotel, we got on our way. Yes, you guessed it..... still in the cramped tiny minibus, most uncomfortable for the next 2 hours and back. Trying to forget that, we then got onto our whale watching catamaran, once again squeashed in tight - to the owners, please don't squash that many people on, it isn't pleasant. We then headed out for the whales, massive highlight, wow, we saw loads, over and over again, how amazing, right next to the boat. Really great. We then had an OK lunch and then headed to Bacardi Island. This really is lovely, worth a visit. A Tom Cruise 'Cocktail' round beach bar and soft drinks and beer all included in the price. Then back to shore on a fun rum-filled trip! Then back to that awful minibus and then back to the place we met for breakfast for more chaos. All in all, the whale and Bacardi Island bit was great, I just wish I had made my own way there. To the owners..... please make the collection and the breakfast part a smoother operation. Cut out the breakfast bit and hand out the pre-packed food items whilst you are on the journey. People have got up early, they don't want to be hanging around for an hour for you to sort yourselves out before leaving.
