Overnight South Coast and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Tour from Reykjavik
2 days
About this activity
This is day 1:
On this tour, we will take you to Iceland's south coast. The route follows a narrow strip of lush green farmland: the colors contrasting beautifully with the the silver sky and cool colours of the mountains, glaciers and vast Atlantic Ocean. The road is lined with waterfalls, including the iconic Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Enjoy the magical atmosphere created by the mists and revel in the excitement as you watch the water thunder down the falls from its crest. These waterfalls are incredibly special because you can get so close to them that you feel the spray on your face. Walk to the very base of Skogafoss, to witness the sheer power of the crashing water. We will pass along the southern edge of the mighty Vatnajokull ice cap, the largest in Europe, and then through Skaftafell National Park. The park offers epic vistas of mountains, rivers and endless plains of sand. Suddenly, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon appears before your eyes in great swathes of glittering blue and white. Your gaze follows the gradients of pale blue, turquoise, teal and deepest navy as you peer down into the crystal clear waters. You might recognise this otherworldly and achingly beautiful location from films such as Die Another Day and Tomb Raider. From the Glacier Lagoon you will head to the Gerdi Guesthouse, a small family-owned hotel near the ocean. There you can visit the nearby Þórbergssetur, a museum in memory of author Þórbergur Þórðarson, have a nice dinner, search for the Northern Lights or just relax and enjoy the quiet Icelandic countryside.
This is day 2:
The next morning you can have breakfast at the hotel before going on a short sightseeing trip to a place called Throng, which is a scenic area along the edge of Vatnajökull glacier. In the afternoon you will then return to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you can try a taste of millennia old ice or scan the water in search of the bottom of the deepest lake in Iceland. Walk along the black sands of Diamond Beach, dotted with ”jewels” of ice formed from waves freezing as they break along the shore. Driving back towards Reykjavik, we will stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, that you probably caught a glimpse of the previous day. If time and conditions allow, try to take the path behind Seljalandsfoss and marvel at the magnificent wall of water before you as you gaze out across the expanse of green meadowland and beyond to the sea. We return to Reykjavik in the evening, after experiencing some of the most fantastic sites that Iceland's nature has to offer.

Difficult to rate really. We did the overnight trip in the expectation we would spend more time at each stop and have a leisurely over night stop and a pleasant relaxed return to Reykjavik on the second day. What transpired was we did the one day trip over two days and were ABANDONED for 24 hours
We myself and my wife just loved this entire trip. The wonderful waterfalls, blacksand beach, hexagonal mountains, aqua blue ice, icebergs, volcanoes, Northern light..... my god!!! It was our trip to a fantasy land! Believe me, this is a memory for our life time. We simple loved it and on top of it, the stay in Fosshotel too was excellent. I would love to go for this again. I would like to say thanks to our tour guide Mr.Olafsson for making it so special. He was so knowledgeable and he even helped me with offering his own rain jacket! This is truly a marvelous trip indeed
