We visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

Proximate to Reykjavik and well worth the money. Beautiful colors and great tour guide. No ice crystals coming up from the ground but amazing colors.
This was a fun, informative tour. The guide was great in explaining how the lava cave was formed and what each groove, color, structure meant. The tour itself took about an hour only out of the 3 hour trip. It took about 45 minutes to get there, 15 minutes for gear and safety instruction and the about an hour of the actual tour. Got back to Reykjavik around 12:30 from a 9am start time. We went in mid Jan so there was ice and snow in the beginning of the cave. Was a bit slippery with the ice but that just adds the the adventure! There is a built walkway path soon after you get down into the cave.
Our guide was great and this was a super experience. Much more color than I expected with all the lichen, moss, and bacteria on the walls of the caves. It was a fun experience, though would be challenging for those unsteady on their feet.
My fiance and I had a lot of fun on this tour. Our guide walked us through the tunnel providing descriptions of how the lava shapes the rocks and tunnel. We would recommend this tour to everyone.
