We based our decision to use Elgin based upon TripAdvisor reviews and ecological focus of the company. Even though it was a chilly 45 degrees Fahrenheit in July and we all downed insulated full storm suits, we stayed on the top deck for the whole journey. It was amazing. We saw two individual Humpbacks and likely several Minkes as well as dozens of puffins, lesser gulls, and even an artic skirt
Unfortunately this tour was cancelled due to bad weather on the day. We had scheduled something for every day so we couldn't rearrange another time. All the tour operators were so helpful flexible and friendly. We had no problem being reinbursed. Even though we didn't go an giving 5stars as they were so helpful
The logistical arrangements, the guides, staff, boats, buses and facilities were all excellent. Unfortunately though we didn't get to see any whales which was a shame. However, because of this we were given a voucher to book on a trip again in the next two years if we were to visit Iceland again which is a nice touch.
Not much out to see, so watched one grumpy humpy for a while. Meh.
Whale watching might be great in summer but it is not definitely a winter activity. It was super cold and we did not see any whales. We did see some dolphins and the crew really tried hard to make it interesting but don't think it is worth the trouble in winter, unless you somehow end up being the lucky one.
