About this activity
Visit the historic city of Petrópolis, former home to Brazilian royalty and a current vacation spot to today’s elite - just 1 hour from of Rio de Janeiro! Located just north of Rio, your ride to do Petrópolis covers a highway full of forests and waterfalls on the way to the picturesque city in the mountains.

You’ll wander down streets lined with tropical trees, and horse drawn carriages and discover why so many people visit Petrópolis each year. Its unique architecture and refreshing mountain air make it a perfect day trip to escape from the busy and steamy Rio de Janeiro.

Your tour begins with a visit to the Imperial Museum, once the summer residence of Emperor Don Pedro II, the final empire who ruled Brazil while it was a monarchy. There, you’ll learn about his family’s opulent lifestyle and and see his gold crown, and the luxurious diamonds and pearl collections that belonged to them.

After the Imperial Museum, you’ll visit the historic Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcântara, a beautiful cathedral built in the neo-gothic style complete with pointed arches, vaulted ceilings and exquisite details. While there, you’ll visit the tombs where Emperor Don Pedro II, his wife Dona Teresa, and their daughter, Princess Isabel, are buried.

You’ll also have some down time to visit the famous Rua Teresa, known for its designers and shopping. While in the town center, lined with 18th century street lamps, you’ll see local art studios, and understand why Rio’s cultural and intellectuals chose to go to Petrópolis to escape the sultry Rio summers.

Complete your day with a visit to the Crystal Palace. With architecture inspired by Crystal Palace in London, the building is made of metal and glass and was frequently used by Princess Isabel for parties. The Crystal Palace is also the location where Princess Isabel became one of the first people in Brazil to free her slaves, when she did it a few months before it became law.

Remember, your tour of Petrópolis is private, so you can customize it so focus on exactly what you want to see. Some of our guests prefer the educational and historic aspect of Petrópolis, while others want to spend more time visiting local creators and finding that perfect piece of Brazilian art to bring home. It’s all up to you! Don’t delay, book your Petrópolis experience today.
