Favela Tour of Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro
5 h
About this activity
Visit the huge bustling favela of Rocinha with a native English speaker, Jody King, who has made the favela his home. Be met at a designated location near your accommodations in the city, then be brought to the top of the favela via public transport. From here, you'll be given a unique insight into life in the favela, and feel an amazing connection with the friendly locals and various projects in the community. Whether it's gazing from stunning viewpoints or wandering through long and winding alleyways, these tours strive to provide an experience that lets you really connect with the community. The different stops include a visit to a capoeira school (Brazilian dance/martial art form) with local group ‘Acorda Capoeira’ and visit the studio of local graffiti artist, "Wark". Lunch is served at the end of the tour in a local, buffet-style restaurant.

Good guided walk. A lot of walking and stairs, so seniors or people with knee problems should be aware and possibly avoid. No need to shop around if you are looking for Favela tour. They are all organized by the same owners but under different product descriptions. For this one specifically, it's not led by the English school principal himself but a guide. There's no lunch included. The total time was around 3 hours.
I enjoyed my day tour to the Rocinha favela the largest favela in Brazil with Jody. He spoke English and introduced me to life in the favela and what it means to the people living there. The tour was not intrusive and was respectful of the lives of the people living in the Rocinha favela. Jody met me at a central train station and we took a bus to Rocinha. We started towards the top of Rocinha where the views were amazing and made our way down through the alleys. We spoke with locals, learned about local artists and had lunch at a local restaurant. We also visited the local school Jody created to teach adults living in the favela English. The tour took about 4 hours and the price covered lunch and a contribution to the school. I recommend this informative, safe, fun tour and look forward to returning.
