Pass By: City Wonders, 00100 Rome Italy
Location
Stop At: Pompeii - Archaeological Area., Porta Marina Superiore (Via Villa dei Misteri) Piazza Immacolata, Piazza Porta Marina inf., 80045 Pompeii Italy
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places, as the licensed guide paints a vivid picture of life in the city’s final days.
You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii as one of the site’s own officially licensed guides will show you around the city, painting a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
In addition to the guided portion of your tour, you’ll have time for wandering and picture-taking in Pompeii – followed by an authentic Neapolitan pizza lunch.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Stop At: Vesuvius National Park, Via Palazzo del Principe, 80044 Ottaviano Italy
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples.
In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

Bus transportation from Rome to Pompeii with guide, Melissa who was good about giving us exact information as to what to expect at different parts of the tour and how they would be organized and executed. She also gave us interesting information about the areas we were passing through as well as the Italian culture. Also, she gave us some tips about finding good restaurants. The pizza lunch that was included was ok,, but the local tour guide for the Pompeii ruins was outstanding. I think her name was Mena or Dena. I'm not sure of the spelling , but her red umbrella whose handle was painted like an Italian lady, was named Lola.
Excellent overall. Bus driver and Chiara (tour guide) brilliant. Long trip from Rome. Not sure I would recommend or do both in one day again. The time spent at Pompeii was way too short! However, very enjoyable day. Just one other thing is that you need a medium level of fitness to climb Mt Vesuvius - in general not for the elderly or very young.
Our tour guide Roberto was awesome. He knew the story of Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. He was demonstrative and helpful.
This was a great day outing our guides Anibel and anna were great very upbeat and full of information.I had hurt my knee and had a hard time walking before the tour, but they made sure I was able to keep up with the group or they stayed with me until I caught up. I was even able to walk part of mount Vesuvius. We had lunch in Naples (Pizza) and were able to watch how they made our pizza. I would recommend this tour to anyone.
Had a great tour of Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii with guide Sean. He was not only knowledgeable and fun, with perfect English, he gave us hilariously bad Italian jokes on the bus ride. We had pizza for lunch in Naples, which is famous for this. Strongly recommended.
Our guide was Robert. He was full of energy and kept us moving along. His knowledge of both Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii we outstanding. His passion and dedication for the trip was awesome.
Barbara was such a joy!! She gave us lots of information but was fun and lively. She even taught us some Italian (and a few songs!). The trip was a day of adventure and a perfect ending to my Rome stay. Food was good, the climb was rough but worth it, and Pompeii was very cool to see. It gets a bit packed so it was hard to keep up with the tour guide in Pompeii but that’s no ones fault. Definitely take this tour!!
So moving. Very informative guide around the Pompeii ruins. Comfortable bus. Hike up Vesuvius is manageable for the views!
Giacomo our guide was spectacular we had amazing day. He was so knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. He made our tour!
A great value for cost and what you get. Tour guide Roberto was very informative and funny! The climb up to Vesuvius was more physically taxing than I thought, but I did make it to the crater! Pizza lunch was good, very fresh. Guide at Pompeii was very knowledgeable with the time she had. Pompeii is such an intense feeling walking in ancient streets frozen in time. I would not recommend this for younger kids or those with difficulty walking uneven terrain or hiking inclines. Long day but worth it to me!
My husband and I both enjoyed our tour of Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. Our lead guide was outstanding. She was most knowledgeable about both sites which added to our enjoyment. We’ve enjoyed all of our Viator tours wherever we’ve traveled. I highly recommend our tour guide at Pompeii also. He was most informative. The entire twelve hour day tour was extremely enjoyable.
A long day but worthwhile if it's your only way to fit Pompeii into your schedule. Could have spent more time at Pompeii but still got to see a lot and walk through a large are with the guide. The view from Vesuvius was fantastic and worth the challenging gradient to see it. Tour Leader Jonathan was great and very helpful.
Kylie, the guide throughout the trip, and the City Wonders crew kept this trip entertaining for everyone. The bus ride (with air conditioning) feels somewhat long, so ensure you use the bathroom at the one 10-15 minute rest stop on the way to the Volcano, which is your first stop and then it's on to Pompei. The trek to the volcano's crater is strenuous with lots of uphill at first once, but once you get to the first gift shop, it's more leveled terrain with some stairs. You have enough time to do the whole trek if you keep up a reasonable pace. You get around an hour total for this journey. One nice touch was Kylie wasn't shy to tell us to avoid shopping at the volcano's gift shops if you are looking to take home a piece of the volcano remains. They are good places to get a drink, though. On top of that, she provided information on where to eat in Rome and the places to avoid. All in all, a good time with plenty of interesting history. Make sure to bring water with you, which is necessary anywhere in Rome during it's hot seasons.
Although this was on our last of 17 days of touring and we were getting very tired, it was one of our best tours. This was very well organized and Jonathan our guide could not have been any better. He was an American who spoke fluent Italian, was bursting with facts and information, had a great sense of humour and kept things rolling all day long. GREAT JOB JOHN!! Well done. To learn about this historic trajedy from such a knowledgeable guide really ended our vacation on a high note. In our sixties, my wife and I managed to ge a couple of the first of our group to reach the summit of Vesuvius and sip the "Tears of Christ" wine that Jonathan recommended. It was nice to try out the origial Neopolitan pizza, The Margarita", but I still prefer the thick crust Canadian pizzas we get here, (sorry John!) I highly recommend this tour and would do it again if ever back in Rome. FIVE STARTS!
This day was one of our favorites for our trip! The hike up to Vesuvius was moderately difficult in the August heat but the views are worth the climb! Pizza lunch was very good and the tour of Pompeii was informative. Bus rides can be long but this tour had a nice stop halfway there and back. Guide was wonderful and even went out of his way to help me recover my phone that was left at the restaurant. Great experience overall.
I came back to Rome just to visit Pompeii and it was great!! My tour guide was Anna L. She was wonderful, very clear on the information and took her time to talked evey individual person to see if we have any questions or concerns and that's excellent job.
Excellent trip. However, weather kept us from Mt. Vesuvious. However, I guide was excellent and gave us history lessons and tips for Italy. All the teens were enchanted.
we had i think one of the most if not the best tour guide out there barbara is the person to have guiding you trou out pompei and mount vesuvius its worth the price
We started our trip to Pompeii really looking forward to it. Unfortunately my husband became ill during the coach journey and was very poorly on arrival at Pompeii. I have to say that the help and assistance provided by our excellent guide Christiano was totally exceptional. We managed despite all the odds to get back to Rome. Massive thank you to Christiano and City Wonders
Our City Wonder tour guide, Robert M. was fantastic. He’s very knowledgeable, speaks English very well, very engaging and passionate about his work! I hope all tour guides would be like him. Our driver, Sylvia, was also great! Made our trip safe! Her driving skills navigating the steep hills going to Mt Vesuvius was pretty amazing. Also our guide in Pompei, Mikael was also fantastic. No matter how hot the weather was and how busy it was in Pompei, he managed to explain all the things he needed to tell us! Overall wonderful experience with this particular tour and our tour guides and driver!
We arrived to the meeting location less than five minutes late and the person checking us in was very rude and not at all understanding about the fact that I needed to open my email to show him the voucher which he didn't need anyways. Our guide, Matteo, was great! He let us sleep for most of the ride to Pompeii, but woke us up just in time to provide us with some facts about the area while arriving in Pompeii. The local tour guide from Pompeii was wonderful, but the tour didn't leave any time leftover to explore on your own. You had maybe ten minutes to explore inside Pompeii on your own at most. The lunch was very good, but there were only three options for pizza, which is something to be aware of. The hike to Mt Vesuvius was a little bit difficult. There is a trail, but the trail is made of very small gravel, which made it difficult to walk up a lot of the hill (think like the consistency of sand). On the trip home, Matteo provided us with info on Rome and plenty of suggestions for places to explore and places to eat.
Fabulous day with our guide Roberto from Rome and the amazing Antonella who is a first class guide. Antonella made sure to incorporate as much info in within the 2 allotted hours. Very professional
Our guide Rob was AWESOME! So friendly, charming, funny....handsome
Chiara was an amazing tour guide for the day! She was entertaining and so friendly! Enzo was a great guide for Pompeii, very knowledgeable and a great time! My only complaint would be that the temperature was so hot! I would not go again in the summer
My daughter and I enjoyed this tour immensely. The tour guide, Sean, and the Pompeii guide, Vito, were both knowledgeable, caring, and funny. Sean, in particular, made the day zoom by with his anecdotes and humor. This trip definitely requires a level of fitness and comfort with heat and motion. The scheduled stops were nice and lunch was pretty good. I can recommend this tour without reservation.
Melissa was an awesome guide, great day all round. My only hitch was the heat but that's what I get for coming to Rome in summer.
It was a great day. Sean our guide was terrific. It was a long day but a great day. The day was well planned
The journey from Rome is 3 hours with a pit stop, the driver and tour guide were fantastic. The ruins of Pompei were very interesting, the tour guide there informative however we expected to see more of what happened to humans too (that was disappointing). The climb up Vesuvius was a bit of a challenge so be ready for that, for those who are not used to alot of fitness especially on a hot day however once you get to the top all worth it!
Emiliano, our guide, was a fantastic host, guiding us through all we needed to know and he made the entire trip easy and cheerful! The bus was on time, the schedule was very clear and easy to respect, all these made the tour a success! Not to forget Enzo, our guide in Pompeii, a great guy, full of knowledge. We are happy we choose this tour and we highly recommend it !
Anna and Willie were great. I wish we had more free time, but it was a long trip already. The climb to the top of Mt. Vesuvius was hard but worth it. Beautiful view.
A definite must see tour if you have time for a day tour. Anna our was a very enjoyable and knowledgeable guide and Enrico our guide in the ruins was very funny and kept our kids interested the whole time. Our stop in Naples for pizza was wonderful. The best pizza we had it Italy!
Kylie was fantastic. Learned a lot in the short amount of time I had to spend. Was run on a tight schedule but didn’t feel rushed. Really impressed. Both sites and lunch were great experiences.
This is an outstanding tour and day that is wonderfully orchestrated. Rubbed or Roberto our host was the very best as he was informative, extremely funny and really made the excursion a truly great memory. Can’t say enough good things about the trip
Convenient pick up Location. Knowledgeable guide. Enough time to climb to the top of Mt. Vesuvius Could have used a little more time at Pompei. Lunch was ok
When in Rome...this is the way to see Pompeii and Mr. Vesuvius. Fortunately we had very clear weather and views all the way to the Island of Capri.
Cristiano, Jonathan and Fausto were amazing. Was our first trip to Italy, decided to take a gamble on city tours which proved to be a great experience. Everything went smoothly on this trip, which was short and concise, yet extremely informative. Cristiano and Jonathan helped us understans Pompeii better ( including the Pompeii guide who took us around Pompeii) and after, gave us individual advice about Rome and travelling Italy etc. Great guides make for a great trip.
Our guide, Roberto was the best! He made the day fun, interesting and overall a perfect day! Jaqimo, the other guide was just as good! Local Pompeii guide, fabulous! Worth every penny! Ciao!
Our tour guides Paulo and Robert were absolutely amazing! They made the day even better than expected. It’s a great trip and the pizza was delicious.
The bus ride was fine and the tour was good, the guide was interesting and the ruins were great. On the way back, the tour representative asked if they could answer any questions. We told them of our plans to visit the Vatican museum and asked them for any suggestions. They recommend there tour. We said we didn't want a tour because the last Sunday of the month was free. They recommend that we go after 12:30 PM to avoid the crowds. The only problem was the museum closed at 12:30
Would 100% recommend this tour, and operator. Our local guide was excellent, English was very good, had a great since of humour and really made the day a great one. Kylie and Anna also delivered great info on the bus both ways and their enthusiasm and knowledge was top quality. Even the snow added to it in my opinion. Highly recommend all parts of the trip
A great adventure to visit Pompeii and Naples (as Mt Vesuvius is closed in the Winter). The City Wonders Guide was fantastic, incredibly energetic and friendly, whilst the private guide who walked us through Pompeii was local and full of knowledge. Would recommend for anyone who doesnt have too much time to go and explore the region yourself
Very informative and insightful tour of Pompeii. Mt Vesuvius is not available during the winter, but took a stroll through Naples instead. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and provided a lot of fun facts during the bus ride to and from Rome. Tour guide at Pompeii was equally informative and answered all of our questions and inquiries. I would highly recommend this tour.
