On August 24th 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted. It would last for two days, completely destroying and burying the town of Pompeii under 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice. Some were fortunate enough to escape in time, but the rest of this ancient civilization unfortunately perished. The volcanic ash created a cask, keeping the buildings underneath it relatively intact - the only evidence of Pompeii’s existence.
