About this activity
Depart from central Rome by air-conditioned coach in the morning and travel out of the city on the 3.5-hour journey to Pompeii.
Nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted on a summer's day here in the year 79AD, covering the town and its many inhabitants in thick layers of volcanic ash. Pompeii has been locked in a time capsule ever since, and the artefacts and buildings on display offer insight into life here almost 2,000 years ago. Today, Pompeii is widely considered to be one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world — a vibrant, well-preserved and accessible destination offering a fascinating look back to an ancient Italian civilization.
Wander from mosaic to monument and temple to theater as you explore Pompeii independently, and marvel at the site’s strong sense of history. Admire the town’s ancient Forum and thermal baths, where Pompeii’s many residents would have played out their days before the eruption.
Stroll along Via degli Augustali, past the age-old limestone columns still standing, and perhaps pose for photographs in front of the centuries-old scenery. To help you navigate your way around, all paths begin and end with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from daily life in ancient Pompeii.
Upgrade your tour to gain access to Pompeii’s fascinating excavations and enjoy a 2-hour tour in a group of no more than 25 people, with personalized attention from your guide.
In the mid-afternoon, hop back aboard your air-conditioned coach for the journey back to central Rome where your Rome to Pompeii independent day tour will come to an end.

I recently went on the Rome to Pompeii shuttle bus and independent day trip with Viator. I can completely recommend this option. It was perfect for our family (we have 3 young kids) and doing an independent tour was also ideal given our kids' ages (all 3 are younger than 10). In the Pompeiian heat in July, they wouldn't have been able to manage a 2-hour guided tour. We did a bit of research in advance and were able to hit the main sites in Regios 6 and 7, which I recommend. Overall, this a really good, cost-effective option for families!
The bus ride was a smooth ride, easy...the guide could have provided us with more information along the ride....
For those who are in Rome and wish to visit Pompei but are short on time this is a good option. Pompei is well worth visiting. The only downside of this tour is that most of the day is spent in transit to and from Pompei leaving about 3 1/2 hours to visit the site. I opted for the guided tour. Although the guide was knowledgeable the tour moved slowly leaving only an hour for independent exploration of the site. I would recommend the tour if you are in Rome and are short on time. But weigh the fact that you will only be at Pompei for only about 3 1/2 hours and if you take the guided tour you will probably be left with an hour to explore the park.
The trip was a blast, got pick up at a designated location. Took a 3 hour ride on a air conditioner bus with very comfortable seats. The English giude was very friendly and knowledgeable of the trip down to Pompeii. Would do it again and would recommend.
We had a fantastic time on this day trip from Rome to Pompeii. Taking the bus allowed us to see some of Italys beautiful country side and have all afternoon in Pompeii. We met at 7 am in Rome and departed at 7:30 am for Pompeii. Our guide Claudia started providing us with tons of history and fun facts the minute we boarded the bus. On the way we saw beautiful fields of blooming poppies, the Apennine Mountains, farms and even part of the Appian Way which starts outside of Rome. About half way we took a short break for using the restroom and having refreshments. This was just enough time. As we approached Pompeii we could see Mt. Vesuvius looming in the background and the coast to our right. When we arrived, Claudia guided us to our starting point and we met our English speaking Pompeii guide Barbara. Pompeii is a very large and busy area. Our guides always made it clear about when and where we needed to meet them. Barbara guided us through the streets of Pompeii. She was extremely informative, witty, and kind. During the 2 hour guided portion of the tour we saw a bakery with the wood stove and grain grinder fully intact. It was amazing. The fire wood oven looked as new as one in a local restaurant. In another area we saw mummified and plaster infused shapes. One shape was a woman covering her face at the moment of her death. We also saw a man, a dog, and a baby. There were statues and intact pottery vases. We saw multiple frescoes. We walked along the stone streets of Pompeii where the people, animals, and carts would have done the same 2000 years ago. The organization and planning of the city were amazingly sophisticated. There were crosswalks and water pipes leading to fountains, and baths, and houses. We saw mosaic entry ways. It is a massive area and there is no way to see everything in an afternoon. We did have enough time to get a sense of the place and saw enough to understand the significance of its history. When we finished the guided portion of the tour, Barbara was very helpful in guiding us to how we might spend the last hour seeing Pompeii. On the bus ride back to Rome, Claudia spoke with each of us about our time so far in Italy and what we might do in the next couple of days. She offered suggestions on what sites we might enjoy in and around Rome. I was so impressed by her kindness and passion. Claudia could have simply relaxed and slept on the bus ride back to Rome, but she did not. She took a personal interest in each one of us and how to make our time in Italy even more enjoyable. Both of our guides were extremely charming, kind, and informative. They were the perfect guides to have on our adventure to Pompeii. Grazie mille!
A budget-friendly excursion from Rome to Pompeii. To get the best out of the experience, I would definitely recommend the optional English-language guided tour -- important to know what you're looking at and any additional information. A good day trip.
My husband was very impressed. The tour guide was again very informative.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and our tour guide.
