The State Hermitage Museum is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world. In 1764 Catherine the Great purchased a collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings and the museum has been open to the public since 1852. Catherine the Great acquired over 4,000 paintings, 38,000 books, 10,000 engraved gems, 10,000 drawings, 16,000 coins and medals, and a natural history collection filling two galleries. Two extensions were built onto the Winter Palace to hold all these cultural wonders.

. Peter and Paul Fortress, a fortification structure of the early 18th century, is one of the most outstanding historical and architectural landmarks in St Petersburg, Russia. Peter and Paul Fortress is considered to be the birthplace of the city and the day of its foundation, May 27, is celebrated as the birthday of St Petersburg. It was founded to protect the territory of the coast of the Gulf of Finland that Russia regained back during the so-called Northern war. The Peter and Paul fortress is a prolonged hexagon with six bastions connected by straight walls. Peter the Great personally observed the construction.

St Isaac’s Cathedral is the fourth largest cupola construction in the world. It’s cupola served as a model for White House in Washington. The fourth highest domed Cathedral in the world (102 meters/333 feet), the construction of this cathedral cost ten times more than the Winter Palace. Nearly 100 kilograms of pure gold were used to gild the dome alone, and the manner in which the solid marble columns were erected is considered a modern engineering marvel.
