Stop At: Peter and Paul Cathedral, Sobornaya Sq., 1 Petropavlovskaya Fortress, St. Petersburg 197046 Russia
This ornate baroque cathedral, with its gilded spire reaching the height of 123 metres, looks more like Protestant church than Russian Orthodox cathedral. That was due to the Peter I's (the Tsar who founded it) great infatuation with Western European culture and that reflected the atmosphere of great changes the country was passing through at that time.
Inside the church you'll see wonderful baroque iconostasis of carved wood and the white tombstones of late Emperors and their relatives. It's a great place to quickly become an expert in the history of Russian Empire - you'll learn main facts about the rule of all the most important Tsars.
Duration: 40 minutes
Stop At: The Prison of the Trubetskoi Bastion, Petropavlovskaya Fortress, St. Petersburg 197198 Russia
This high-security prison was a place where the most dangerous political opponents of the Tsarist regime were safely locked up - nobody was able to escape its thick granite walls. Such famous people as Dostoyevsky, Bros Tito, Tsarevitch Alexey (Peter I's own son), Princess Tarakanova (alleged daughter of Elizabeth I) and leaders of 1825 Decembrists' Revolt were imprisoned here. While we walk along the prison halls, which evoke strong feelings and reflections, you'll learn about prominent inmates and their life in custody, the brief political history of Russia and some of the crises in the history of this "establishment".
