About this activity
The Union Square, Nob Hill, and Chinatown Tour explores 3 of San Francisco’s most central and historic neighborhoods in 3 ½ miles and 2 ½ hours. The hike starts right in Union Square, now famous for shopping, but once a gathering place for celebrating Union victories in the Civil War.
From here, you’ll head uphill to take in the sights of Nob Hill—the Fairmont Hotel, The Pacific Union Club, Grace Cathedral, and the Cable Car Museum—learning about San Francisco before and after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. At the Cable Car Museum, you won't just learn about cable car history, you'll also walk into the museum and see, hear, and smell the 1870s technology that still runs on San Francisco streets today.
From Nob Hill, you'll head into Chinatown, visiting places like the Chinatown Gate, and Portsmouth Square, the location where Gold Rush was announced to the world. You'll also visit the the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory to see fortune cookies being made before your very eyes.
From Chinatown, you'll dip into North Beach to visit Jack Kerouac Alley and City Lights Bookstore, two reminders of the Beat Generation. Lastly, you'll stand in a redwood grove at the base of the Transamerica Pyramid before arriving back at Union Square.
