The Poás Volcano National Park, is a national park of Costa Rica that covers an area of approximately 65 km² (16,000 acres). Founded on January 25, 1971, it is located in the province of Alajuela, 45 km northwest of San José, capital of the country, within the conservation area of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, attached to the National System of Conservation Areas.
The main attraction of the park is the Póas volcano, a complex and very active stratovolcano that reaches 2708 meters above sea level, and one of the main peaks of the country. It is considered one of the most important eruptive centers of Costa Rica and one of the natural wonders of the country. In turn, the park that shelters it is the most visited nationwide. The park has a visitor center, basic services and trails.
The volcanic massif of the Poás is composed of three craters: Main (active), Von Frantzius (by Alexander von Frantzius, German doctor and explorer) and Botos (in reference to the natives living in the area). The main crater is 300 m deep and has a diameter of approximately 1.32 km in a north-south direction, which makes it the largest geyser crater in the world1 and one of the largest craters in the world.2 It remains active in today, with small gas emissions and an acid lagoon. The last major eruptions were between 1952 and 1954, 2014 and since April 2017, presenting phreatic eruptions of considerable magnitude, which have led to the indefinite closure of the park for safety.
The Botos crater is a lake with green water due to the amount of sulfuric acid in the water and has a diameter of 365 m. It is surrounded by cloud forest, which makes it one of the main obstacles of the place, next to the observation of the main crater.
The Poás area is a region rich in biodiversity and agricultural production. The park has a wide variety of wildlife such as squirrels, various kinds of birds, saínos and dozens of orchids and bromeliads.
