Xunantunich was visited by Prince Harry on March 2nd, 2012 during his 24-hour Royal visit to Belize. You will drive for 1.5 hours to the picturesque Village of San Jose Succotz where you will cross on a hand crank ferry to arrive at Xunantunich. Magnificent friezes have been uncovered on both the East and West sides depicting Venus, the Sun God, Earth Monsters, Deities, Celestial bodies and other interesting features. It is believed that at one time the frieze wrapped around the four sides of the El Castillo, which has roof combs at the highest point. El Castillo is the second tallest structure in Belize measuring more than 130 feet above the main plaza. The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center has an area of 29 acres of Tropical Savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The Zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, born at the Zoo, rehabilitated or sent to the Belize Zoo as gifts from other Zoological Institutions. A visit to the Zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the Wildlife of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. The animals live in their natural habitat and this Zoo is very popular and a Tapir was born here named April which is now a celebrity.
