Turneffe (The Elbow)
1 day
About this activity
Turneffe Atoll is the largest of the three atolls in Belize, the only atoll with an extensive cover of mangroves. There is also a spectacular wall suitable for every level of diver. Turneffe Atoll is not heavily developed, and has a lot of pristine marine life. Visibility is excellent, which makes it very easy to see horse-eye jacks, snapper, and permit. Turneffe makes the scuba diving an adventure like no other dive destination in the Caribbean. The vastness and variety of marine life and coral formations are incredible. One of the famous dive site will be Caye Bokel better known as "The Elbow" which is further south roughly about 60-65 miles from San Pedro. What makes this amazing is the walls; there are many creatures to spot while diving, grouper and jacks numbering at times in the thousands. Visibility here ranges from great to rather poor depending on the wind direction than currents. Waves can stir things and lots of surprises can be seen. On a good day this atoll holds the best dive. The Elbow is one of the few drift dive that is actually a true drift dive, but of course if the current is cooperating. Diving depth : 60-130ft (18-40m) The best action is over the edge at 60-120ft. Where you can see cubera snapper schools, horse eye jacks, reef sharks, king mackerel, turtles.
