The Santa Fe Botanical Garden began in 1987 as a vision of a small group of local gardeners, botanists and environmentally oriented citizens to establish a botanical garden in Santa Fe. Its two sites have become a valuable resource to our area through educational programs and service to the community.

The Santa Fe Botanical Garden at Museum Hill, designed by landscape architect W. Gary Smith, integrates the natural and the man-made, a location chosen for its natural beauty and environmental interest has been transformed by excellent garden design, horticultural practice, and architecture. Throughout the gardens native plants are mixed with appropriate non-natives, all selected to demonstrate the variety and richness that can be achieved even in this region of scarce water.

The Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve is a 35-acre nature preserve located on the I-25 frontage road south of Santa Fe. The preserve is adjacent to El Rancho de las Golondrinas in La Cienega. This rare natural cienega, or “marsh” in Spanish, hosts a bountiful diversity of plants and wildlife. The Preserve contains three distinct plant communities or zones. They are: riparian/wetland, transitional, and dry uplands.
