About this activity
Your guide will come to pick you up at your centrally located Seville hotel around 7am, and then drive you out of Seville to the nearest birding location programmed for the day. Snacks and bottled water will be available in the vehicle, and you will be provided with a bird checklist and notebook. Your guide will have a spotting scope which will enable participants to get close-up views of many of the birds you will see.
In under an hour you should be out and about and birding in earnest. Your guide will have used his best professional criteria to choose the exact itinerary, depending on many factors such as the time of the year, recent sightings, habitat variety, quality and accessibility, and particular bird-related interests that participants may have expressed. In all likelihood there will be a great variety of wetland birds, which should include many of the following: rare and localised species such as the White-headed Duck, Red-knobbed Coot, Marbled Duck; a wealth of herons and egrets such as Little Bittern, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Black Stork, White Stork,Eurasian Spoonbill and Greater Flamingo; Collared Pratincole, Whiskered Tern, Western Swamphen; waders, gulls, terns, grebes, ducks, warblers and more. In between the wetland areas there are pinewoods, crops and open fields, pastures and scrubland, all adding to the potential variety of birds you can see. Crested Tit, Sardinian Warbler, Dartford Warbler, European Bee-eater, Eurasian Hoopoe, Iberian Grey Shrike and Iberian Magpie can all be found in wooded and scrubby areas; out in the fields you can look for larks, such as Calandra and Short-toed Larks, and watch the bushes for birds such as Great Spotted Cuckoo, Black-winged Kite, Isabelline Warbler and anything else that moves!
All the time you'll be well-advised to keep an eye on the skies too, as in addition to the usual Griffon Vultures and Black Kites you could also see Lesser Kestrels, Booted Eagles, Short-toed Eagle and, with a good dose of luck, one of the world's rarest birds of prey, the Spanish Imperial Eagle.
Then all that remains is the return trip to your hotel in Seville, perhaps making the most of the ride to take stock of all that you have seen that day.
