Meet your guide at the lobby of your hotel in Shanghai city center and start your exciting full-day tour.
First we will bring you to the Jade Buddha Temple, founded in 1882 under the reign of Emperor Guangxu. The two jade Buddha statues inside the Temple were imported into Shanghai from Burma by sea during the Qing Dynasty. Now there is also a marble reclining Buddha statue donated from Singapore. The temple is peaceful, and is a center of meditation.
Duration: 45 minutes
Stop At: Shanghai Confucian Temple, No.215 Wenmiao Road Huangpu District, Shanghai 200010 China
Then we will visit the Shanghai Confucian Temple, which is also known as Shanghai Wen Miao. This temple doesn’t only honor one of ancient China’s most important thinkers, but is also a refuge from the buzzing Old Town. There is a market located right outside the temple if you want to purchase some souvenirs to take home.
After having a traditional Chinese cuisine lunch, you will enjoy a tea ceremony at the oldest tea house in Shanghai. If you think tea tasting is easy, just watch the intricate processes involved in making the tea – a process that differs for each type of tea.

Stop At: Yu Garden (Yuyuan), No.218 Anren Street, Huangpu District near Fuyou Road, Shanghai 200010 China
The last stop of this tour is the Yuyuan Garden, the city’s most famous example of the traditional gardens as historically kept by wealthy families in the Ming & Qing Dynasties. After exploring the Yuyuan Garden, spend time wandering through the markets and bazaars of Shanghai’s Old Town. This is the perfect opportunity to get souvenir shopping done while soaking up the atmosphere of old Shanghai.

The Ancient Shanghai, temples and garden tour was wonderful! My guide Sophie Li was very knowledgeable and flexible. We saw what Was important to me, allowing me to linger in Temples and gardens. I was not at all interested in shopping (having been taken advantage of a few days before, a $ costly experience) and we focused on history, religion, tea and a nice meal. I learned a great deal about the people of China, perspectives and values. Excellent context for understanding the culture - thank you Sophie! I highly recommend this tour and Sophie if you want a relaxed, enriching and educational day.
The only reason I gave this tour 3 stars is because there was a miscommunication about what I was purchasing from Viator. Viator did not communicate the itinerary to the local tour company. Based upon the Viator description, I was expecting a small group possibly bus tour with a set itinerary: The Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai Confucian Temple, Yu Garden, Old Town and a tea ceremony. When I met our guide in the hotel lobby and she first asked me for my itinerary. Huh? She had no clue about the Experience Ancient Shanghai Day Tour of Jade Buddha Temple and Shanghai Old Town. What we ended up with was a private guide, a driver, and a car which was really fantastic! I just had to remember what I wanted to see that would not duplicate the other guided tour which was to be provided later by our cruise line. Our tour guide was a very pleasant young lady named Megan who spoke excellent English and was knowledgeable about the places we visited. She took us to the Jade Buddha temple, The Confucian Temple, the Shanghai Museum, and the French Concession. She also took us to a local restaurant for lunch and ordered food for us. This was not a restaurant that I would have ventured to on my own because we had been warned about the lack of hygiene in many smaller local Chinese restaurants, but the dishes/plates were covered in a shrink wrap to keep them clean and the food was good, and best of all we had no stomach issues later. I would recommend that anyone wanting to tour Shanghai employ some type of guided tour as this is a city that is NOT easy to do on your own. Pedestrian traffic is a dangerous nightmare as signals and traffic lanes are generally ignored by the locals, and pedestrians don't have the right of way. If not for the itinerary confusion, I would have given this tour a 5 star rating.
