Chongming Dongtan is a typical marshy land at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Since 1998 when Dongtan Protection Zone was set up, approximately 128 hooded cranes have been seen there. Now it has become a tourist destination, where viewers can enjoy the unique birds scene, hardly visible in the other parts of the country.
The best time for the unique birds scene is from late autumn to early winter. And also it's the best spot to see the sunset in Shanghai.
Besides, you could enjoy the view of flower land in spring and summer, riding a bike, having a barbecue, and so on.
