The boat trip is 2 hours each way, that 4 hours of your day. Incw u arrive at the island, there is a very small museum with few artifacts. The replica buildings are "ok" but not worth the time it takes to get there. It goes without saying that there are nonorigjnal ruins to view. Please note: parents travelling with small children. This boat ride is long and tedious. There were many families there with children under 4. Broadly speaking, the children did not cope well. There is nowhere to move about for them. Please take heed!!!
Very entertaining and informative day at Birka. Our guide (Elm) was hillarious and honest. A bit disappointed to know that Bjorn Ironside was not burried here but learned so much more about the viking lives and Birka's true facts !!!
The boat trip is 2H each way. A total of 3.5H was spent at Birka. Same could probably be dropped to no more than 3H. The museum is excellent for some insight into what the settlement possibly looked like. There is a small Viking village, using old techniques to build the building and depicting different roofing materials [like grass and hay; there was animal skins too]. Tours are conducted in Swedish and English, lasting some 45M, the talk about Birka as a trading settlement, its later fortifications and the attempt by Ansgar to bring Christianity to the Vikings. There was some commentary about various islands and geographic formations heading up. The boat was clean with ample seating against the cold winds. Viking warriors did not have horns in their helmets. What they did do is trade wide and far, a seafaring people who were far from the more barbaric image fostered over the centuries.
awesome....
