First of all.....can't always see whales.....but go to enjoy the great boat and Tony! We loved our experience on his 42' motorized sail boat and especially with his local friend and marine biologist we had a fantastic view of the harbor and all its historical notes...the harbor entrance and the ocean with great views of the beaches. No whales our day but the trip did not disappoint in any way.
This trip with skipper Tony was the highlight of our 3 1/2 weeks holiday in Australia. However we were unsure to start with. We arrived at the quay indicated on our paperwork and found loads of people waiting to board a large boat. After some discussion our boat was to be found at the quay next to the one on our paperwork. The boat is small compared to the other whale watching boats in the area but I very quickly became very comfortable as Tony was very professional and knowledgeable about the area and sea conditions. On board there was the 2 of us and 2 other passengers, there was also a couple who were locals and very knowledgeable about whales, I am sorry but their names escape me. As Tony navigated our way out of the harbour the gentlemen whale watcher told us lots of information of what we were seeing in the harbour and was very knowledgeable and interesting, his wife surprised us on the way back to the harbour with a delicious muffin too. On reaching the sea we came across a mother and calf humpback. Other boats were in view and we were joined by 2 other boats, the whales seemed to pop up near those boats more than ours. The captains of these boats do share information regarding where the whales are showing themselves which is good. After a while we were left by the other boats and I think because we were a small craft the whales seemed to take no notice of us. The mother and calf surfaced near our boat, it was at this time when the size of these fantastic creatures dawned on me. Exhilaration, awe, happiness and feeling slightly frightened all came over us at once. The mother then started flapping her tail powerfully in the water and the calf breached a few times. It may be that a male humpback which suddenly appeared caused this display. All through the trip Tony and 'the couple' only showed complete professionalism and regard for us and particularly for the whales. Take my advice, if you take one whale watching trip in Sydney, take it with Tony. If I am ever back in Sydney again I would book this trip as many times as I could. Thanks Tony for a great time.
This boat is very small, and if you get sea sick like I do, you should probably skip this. I am giving this a good review because I got very sick and the operator was kind enough to turn the boat around and take us back to shore.
The captain was really good however we experienced freak weather which made the boat really sea sickening and rather scary. Didn't see any whales but was the end of the season. However the captain was good and knowledgable and talking through species
Very enjoyable, lived up to all my expectations. Saw several whales
