Visit the scene of a fierce battle at the Gate Pa Battle Site. An important and fascinating part of Tauranga’s history – this is where British forces fought local Maori in 1864, and came off second best!

This is just a short walk from our lunch stop at Bobby's Fish Market - where we stop for approximately 45 minutes to enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh fish and chips on the waterfront. This place is famous in Tauranga for having the best fish and chips around.

Enjoy a tour of a working kiwifruit orchard in the heart of New Zealand's kiwifruit industry. Travel on the unique 'Kiwi Karts' to learn about this amazing fruit and it's contribution to the Bay of Plenty economy. Plus, taste kiwifruit products at the small store on site.

Leaving Maketu we first travel alongside the Maketu estuary - home to a wide variety of birdlife. We travel back through the town of Te Puke (the kiwifruit capital of the world) to Papamoa Beach. Here you will see the city of Tauranga creeping along the beachfront. We stop so you can admire Maketu peninsula to your right, and Mt Maunganui in the distance away to your left along a sweeping 30 kilometre beach. Learn about the offshore islands and hear about New Zealand's worst maritime disaster.
