8-Day Baja Bird Watching Adventure
8 days
About this activity
Your 8-day fully guided bird watching adventure includes all transportation, meals, accommodations, bilingual birding guide and up close wildlife encounters with gray whales and sea lions.
On day 1, you will be picked up from the airport in San Jose del Cabo and transferred to Los Colibris "The Hummingbirds" Casitas overlooking the Todos Santos estuary. This will be your home for the first 2 nights of the trip. You can spot abundant bird life right on the property and see some of the endemic Baja species, including Xantus’s Hummingbird and Gray Thrasher.
The next day, you will explore the lagoon in more depth as it is one of the most important habitats in Baja for the endangered endemic species, the Belding’s Yellowthroat. You will most likely see several of these on your first outing. You may also spot Magnificent Frigatebirds, Black-necked Stilts, Black Phoebes, Brown Pelicans, American Coots, Great Egrets, Eared Grebes, Pacific Loons, Tricolored Herons, Northern Pintails, Clark’s Grebes, White-faced Ibis and more.
The following days, you will explore the diverse habitats of Baja California Sur. First, you will go to a ranch in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains for one night where you'll look for the endemic Cape Pygmy owl. You'll then head to the incomparable Isla Espiritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for two nights of "glamping" in comfortable walk-in safari-style tents. You'll visit rookeries for blue-footed boobies and great blue herons and see various coastal birds such as the Yellow-footed Gulls, Caspian Terns, Franklin’s Gulls, Bonaparte’s Gulls, Least Terns, Snowy Plovers and more.
From Espiritu Santo, you'll make your way to Magdalena Bay, which is the largest wetlands ecosystem on the west coast of Baja. Pacific Gray whales come to this place each winter to mate and give birth. You may encounter them and see them bring their babies right up to the boats. You will do two outings in pangas for whale watching and bird watching.
Besides seeing the magnificent whales, you'll possibly spotBrandt’s Cormorants, Double-crested Cormorants, Little Blue Herons, Mangrove Warblers, Hermann’s Gulls, Whimbrels, Wilson’s Phalarope, Black-crowned Nighthawks, Marbled Dowitchers and much, much more.
You'll return to Todos Santos for your final night to then catch your fly out of Cabo the next day.
