About this activity
Kamakura is rich in nature. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and by the sea on the other side. In 13th century Minamoto Yoritomo, a samurai warrior, established the first military government in Kamakura because it is the best place against enemy's attacks.
He constructed a lot of temples and shrines to protect his government. In this tour I will take you to Hase Temple, Great Buddha, Tsurugaoka-hachimangu Shrine, and a pretty street called Komachi-dori.
Hase Temple is only about five-minute walk from the Hase station. This temple is dedicated to the Eleven-headed Kannon who is said to watch the people and save all the people in the world. Hase Temple is also famous for about 2.500 hydrangeas of more than 40 different kinds. In a rainy season the ground of the temple is covered with beautiful blue and pink hydrangeas.
Great Buddha in Kotokuin Temple is about 13meters high and 121 tons in weight, the second largest statue after the Great Buddha in Nara in Japan. The Great Buddha sitting against the backdrop of the blue sky and the green trees is amazing. Tsurugaoka-hachimangu Shrine is the most popular shrine in Kamakura. The approach to the shrine is lined with a lot of cherry trees. In spring you can enjoy walking through the pink-colored tunnel of cherry blossoms.
Between Tsurugaoka hachimangu Shrine and Kamakura station there is a pretty street with a lot of restaurants and shops selling traditional Japanese souvenirs. You can enjoy eating or shopping there.
