About this activity
This small-group, 5-hour tour will take you to discover the Mayan ruins in Coba. Your pickup time from your hotel in Tulum or Riviera Maya will be between 7 and 7.30 am.
You will be heading inland to Cobá and then enter deep in the jungle. This ancient Mayan city, the most recent to be discovered, is unique among other ruins in the Yucatan. Settled much earlier than either Chichen Itzá or Tulum—construction reached its peak between 800 and 1100 AD—it once housed population of 40,000 Mayans. It was also the center of the Mayan roadway system, consisting of raised stone causeways known as sacbeobs.
Your guide will lead you through the site, pointing out how Cobá's towering pyramids and sculpted stone slabs resemble the architecture of Tikal in Guatemala more so than other nearby Yucatan sites. And since the area is not completely excavated, you will be seeing mounds that are still totally covered with vegetation. You will be following the paths to arrive at the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the Yucatan's tallest pyramid which is 138 feet (42 meters). From the top of the pyramid, you will be enjoying a wonderful view of the sub-tropical jungle that surrounds the site.
Optional bike rentals allow you to see even more of the site. With this tour early departure, you'll avoid the heat and crowds.
Hotel pickup and drop-off, entrance fees, snack and beverages, and your professional guide are all included.
