Stop At: Piazza San Marco, 31024 Venice Italy
Piazza San Marco often known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as la Piazza ("the Square"). All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta and the Piazzale Roma) are called campi ("fields"). The Piazzetta ("little Piazza/Square") is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its south east corner (see plan). The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice and are commonly considered together. This article relates to both of them.
A remark usually attributed (though without proof) to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe"
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Doge's Palace, Piazza San Marco, 1, 30124 Venice Italy
The Doge's Palace is a palace built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice in northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic, opening as a museum in 1923. Today, it is one of the 11 museums run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Canal Grande, 30100 Venice Italy
The Grand Canal (Venetian Canal Grando, known in Venetian dialect Canałasso, Canalazzo) is the main canal that crosses the historic center of Venice. About 3800 meters long (30 to 70 m wide, medium depth 5 m), it divides the old town into two parts, tracing an inverted "S", which goes from the bridge of the Liberty Bridge to the San Marco Basin.
It is flanked along its length by magnificent buildings, most of the centuries between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries, which manifest the well-being and art created by the Republic of Venice, making it one of the symbols of the city. Every year the Venetians relive centuries-old traditions of the Serenissima, such as the Historical Regatta.
