Founded more than 2000 years ago, Verona became soon "second only to Rome" itself for its richness of monuments; after the fall of the Roman Empire and the "dark ages" of the barbarian kings, Verona lived a second golden age in the Middle Ages, under the domination of the Scala family, the age to which the origins of the myth of Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague date back. Renaissance style flourished under the Venetian Serenissima Repubblica, and brilliant military architecture confirms the strategic role of this center until the end of Austrian rule and the annexion of Verona to the Kindom of Italy in 1866.
